Event 1

One of the events I went to was Lights On Afterschool in Smithfield. At the Lights On Afterschool event they had different activities for the children to do. One of the activities was the children being able to color a light bulb and write what they enjoyed doing after school. The children's Workshop then had them lined up along the highway so everyone could read them as they were walking down the hallway. I noticed that they kept them up for about a month to help represent how important it is to have after school programming for youth. Some other activities that children's Workshop had out were designed around stem. These activities were science and math based but giving the youth area to be creative and how they are going to solve a problem. One example of this was different size paper tubes. The children had to create a tower as tall as they could without it falling over. The other angle that they were helping the students learn about science and technology was using tablets and a app that allowed students to create different types of bridges and then see what the bridge would be able to hold up.
Overall, I thought this was a great event. First reason is parents were able to see what their children were learning in the after-school program and the children were able to take the power and show the parents what they were doing. There were teachers there to help with the after-school program but you were able to see the youth taking charge and showing their families around the center. You could see how proud the children were when showing their families what they enjoy doing after school. I liked how the teachers had a representation of letting the kids right on the after-school lights to tell what they enjoyed about their after-school program. I did ask the children's Workshop staff what they did with the light bulbs or if they actually read them and they told me they did. This actually help them create more programming for the students to figure out what they were really interested in. I thought this is a great angle to learn more about what their students wanted to learn about and not with the teachers wanted to teach.
